Kevin wrote more

Go check out Kevin's blog, he's written TWO entries recently. He's almost as good as I am (as I note the 10 days it's been....)

Whew. Thanks Ladies.

And because I hate to only present one side of a picture, I'll mention that Kevin took this morning's shift (which he got off easy because Patrick slept until 7am! But he was willing to get up at 5am...God must love him more.) AND he got up with Patrick twice last night. Luckily, a little snuggle and reassurance was all it took.

I do agree that parenting is never fully equal. What kids need at different stages of their lives is changing. But I consider myself lucky to have married a man who is such a great Dad.

Even if I do want to pull his spleen out with a fork, on occasion.

He also says I obsess over whether he's going commando in his kilt. And I do. Is that wrong?

When two good parents have a rough night

Today started out a bit rough.

That's because it began at 1:30am. Patrick woke up with a nightmare (I'm assuming) and refused to be consoled. Kevin cuddled, changed his diaper, sang, and rocked. Content in his arm, Patrick burst into screams of protest the second Kevin attempted to lay him down.

We tried to let him fuss. Neither one of us desire to co-sleep with our kids (with the rare exception), and we were hesitant to bring him into bed. Patrick raged for about 30 minutes, which at 2am equals 20 million years.

A bit of a parenting conflict entered the picture.

Kevin wanted me to try to sooth him, thinking that maybe I'd have more luck getting him into his crib. I was willing to let him fuss a big longer, but told Kevin that if he wasn't comfortable he was welcome to go get him. We laid there for 10 more minutes. I sort of lost it, fed up with 21 months of interrupted sleep.

It could go without saying that I was feeling the discrepancy of night-time parenting especially hard this night. But it won't, because I'm going to say it. Now that I no longer nurse at night, I was hoping that Kevin would take over the majority of night time issues. They are few and far between. This has not exactly been the case.

Kevin did get up with Patrick and slept with him in the other room. Neither one of us ended up sleeping well. Kevin couldn't fully relax with Patrick in the bed, and I kept worrying about how they were doing.

So when Kevin came in at 6am to ask if I would get up with Patrick so he could get more sleep, I was less than gentle when I "refused to acquiesce to your request." This was supposed to be my day to sleep in. While I never specifically mentioned that, I hoped he'd recall the 3-4 days this week he didn't get up until at least 6am, if not later. He didn't. Now I'm pissed off enough that it's not like I'm going to go back to bed anyway. We are both up, fairly pissy, and exhausted. Charming.

We talked it out rather well over coffee and Charlie and Lola. Some good listening skills came into play, Kevin gave a well thought-out viewpoint of his experience (and he was right--Patrick needed one of us last night). I told him I thought that night-time parenting was the last holdout of unequal experiences. We both agreed to keep talking and working on it, and the morning took a nice turn upwards.

But ladies, don't you feel my pain here? After 18 months of at least (and probably more, really) 75% of night-time and early morning parenting, is it too much to ask that somebody else take the lead? And once that's agreed to, the actual execution of it?

And the songs from Mamma Mia keep running through my head

I woke up this morning feeling rather puffy, like all the crackers I ate at work yesterday just migrated straight to my thighs.

So I ate a cookie for breakfast to feel better.

Done and done

Faust is finished. It was fantastic! And the opera is always a lovely experience. Great people. Great music. But exhausting for both of us. Kevin had late nights, I took the early mornings, and neither one of us got much sleep. It will be nice to have him home again. Thank goodness for my Mom, who came up this weekend to babysit while we worked, and we both even got a bit of playtime in. Thanks Mom!

Before I go to bed

I just watched Mamma Mia. Brie, you are totally right. This is the BEST movie, and I sang along to almost all the songs. Now I just have to watch it with my mom. But I would have wanted Bill to be my dad, because I'd want to shag Sam and Harry.

Kevin took me shopping, and I found a dress for the wedding next month! I also found another dress that Kevin made me buy. You know that look you get from a boy when all they want to do is tear your clothes off and make passionate love on the nearest horizontal surface? For us married couples, that look can be few and far between. Not that we don't love our spouses, but watching a person floss can take some of the mystery out of a relationship. I got that look with the dress....Kevin always was a leg man.

I still have to do my taxes, and I suspect we'll end up owing money. The opera is a lovely gig, but it's a contract job and they don't withhold taxes. I've gone from hoping for a check to simply hoping I don't have to write one for more than $500. Like I needed another reason to loathe our last president. Jerk.

The Seven Year Itch

Kevin and I got married today. Seven years ago. What anniversary is this? I bet Lena and Lisa know.

To celebrate, I delivered babies most of the day. Kevin did some chores and stayed out late at tech rehearsal for Faust. I forgot to say Happy Anniversary as I walked out the door. But I did call from work. Kevin brought me a card and said, "It's OK, you can pick me up one on your way home." He also brought cupcakes! I did pick up a card on the way home. Kevin and I rarely buy a card more than one hour before we will be giving it to the other person. This is why our family members never receive cards on time.

Yesterday, Kevin looks me in the eyes with the sweetest expression and softly said, "I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm not trying to annoy you." I felt like a bad wife yesterday.

But this year Kevin gets the expensive anniversary present. A new SportKilt! Does that smooth things over? Probably not as much as expensive electronic crap, but it will have to do.

Happy anniversary Babe. You are, always and forever, the center of my life. I am grateful for you every day. And you are still a tiger in the sack. Grrrr.
