As if the heat isn't difficult enough

I come home after my second 12 hour shift in a row to a husband who says, "I'm not feeling so good."

The house is 90 degrees.

Patrick isn't sleeping.

And I have a sick man.

Fantastic.

It was sort of a vacation, but it's the best I'm going to get

I'm tired. It's hot out. Patrick didn't nap well and my neighbor (who I do like) is doing construction outside of Patrick's window minutes after putting him to bed.

So, mostly pictures. As I don't have much of interest to write (that I'm willing to put on the internet...) luckily that's all my mom really wants to see.

The day after our adorable niece's fifth birthday party (and some long awaited Papa and Nana time), we took advantage of an unexpected free day to take Patrick to Woodland Park Zoo together. The weather was calm but cloudy. Perfect for me, as I'm not enjoying the heat much this summer. Boy is it big. Patrick did quite well, in great spirits and listened to instructions. Unless we were trying to get a picture taken.

Later that week I jetted south to visit the family. The last time Kevin and I were there for wine tasting I was a terrible sister and didn't tell my brother, David, that I was in town. He found out as we were leaving. He was not impressed. Later I was talking to another brother about it. He responded, "Yeah, Dave mentioned that three separate times." :) My brothers DO like me! Yeah! So I made up to him by seeing him for about 12 hours throughout the weekend. Kevin was stuck up here working, and I missed him so much, as did everybody else. I think I got asked about Kevin almost as much as I was asked about Patrick.

We started with an evening park concert with Mom, Mimi Cindy (my wicked stepmother), the grandparents, me and Patrick. I'm getting old. The music was too loud. The next day was swimming at Dave's apartment. Fabulous! That pool is a real mark against home ownership. Lightly heated, not too crowded. Patrick had the best time with Uncle Dave, because he is big and strong and can toss him all over the pool. That evening was a family dinner.

Here is a list of the family:
Me
Patrick
Mom
Mom's housemate Craig, who we love
David (my brother)
Beth, his gorgeous wife and a great sister-in-law!
Cindy (my stepmother, except she's not really because she and my dad got a divorce, but we liked her so much we decided to keep her and now she and mom are best buds.)
Tom (Cindy's next husband, and hopefully the last because we really like him too)
Dylan (a brother, but really a ex-stepbrother as he's Cindy's oldest kid, but darnit, he's still a brother)
Jess, Dylan's wife and my gorgeous sister-in-law!
Holly, their cute baby
Grandma and Grandpa
missing in action: Wade (Cindy's middle son and still a brother, he was working) and John (Cindy's youngest, my half-brother) who was tired from work and wimped out.

They are a lot of fun and some of my life's biggest blessings.

We hit a small reunion on Saturday, down in the farm country of Oregon. Old friends of Mom's, I was infants with their children. It was a beautiful piece of property, and we got to relax all day. OK, relax is relative when it also includes chasing Patrick. Mom really entertained him so I could chat also. She is, and always will be, the best. The only downside was a lot of the younger crowd who had committed to coming backed out last minute for very lame reasons. Life happens, I understand, but seriously? I made it from Tacoma with a toddler in tow. You all live in Eugene. But David, who came with his cute dog, stayed the entire time. I was so happy to hang out with him all day. Thanks Dave!

While the weekend was a blast, it was not very restful. I drove at least two hours every day for four days. Patrick went to bed at 10pm two nights in a row, and this does not translate to sleeping in. He was up at 5:30am every day. He didn't nap well, and for two days his naps were in the car, which meant I didn't nap. Yikes. But it sure was fun. Hopefully Kevin can come with me the next time. Then he can drive.

2 years old

My sweet Patrick, you are a big boy of 2 years old! I watch you sleeping (such a cliche but the most perfect way to end the day) and your tall body fills the crib. You sleep like I do, on your tummy with your arms above your head or holding one of your stuffed animals. The current favorites are the walrus from Daddy and the husky puppy from Mimi Cindy. And as I go to sleep at night, I know that you'll be calling for us around 5:30am, your constant wake up time. No matter when you nap or go to bed, winter or summer, that's the time. We hear you shouting in the morning. "Ab ah Dada! Mama!" At least, that's what it sounds like, you still aren't the best talker yet. You'll be standing up with a big smile for us as we get you and bring you back to bed for a little cuddle time before you insist on going downstairs. And the day has begun.

We had a wonderful, simple birthday for you. I'm afraid your Mommy and Daddy wimped out, just the tiniest bit. We haven't had a party yet. But we will...we think. But your day was perfect. Both of us were home for the weekend. The morning started off simple. Farmers' Market. The playground. A walk with the dogs. During your nap the house got decorated with streamers and balloons. I made your cake. Not as fancy as what Grandma made you last year. This was just a simple sheet cake with frosting and sprinkles. But hey! It was all homemade!

I think the biggest hit was the balloons from the dollar store. Even your present didn't garner as much excitement. But you sure knew how to unwrap it! That must be in the kid gene, along with refusing all new foods but if it looks remotely like a cookie it's in.

We sang Happy Birthday, played with your new t-ball set, and then out to play at Fort Nisqually and the zoo. You are thinking very hard about your present here. We can tell because your tongue is sticking out.

Mommy is loving 2 years old. You are playful and fun, (mostly) cooperative, learning tons of new games, can mimic when you want to, and you are pretty good at playing independently. You give lots of hugs and kisses. You go down for naps and bed like a dream, and you still take 2-3 hour naps. Mommy really loves that. Everyday you want to go to the zoo. It's one of the few words that you say on a regular basis. You still have lots of those baby words that you understand perfectly, but we don't have a clue. Sorry about that.

It's all just so fast. I hope I can keep up with you, my wonderful little boy. You are my life and my world, my joy and my greatest blessing. We love you so much.

Love
Mommy
