And then she saved my life

Kevin opened the store this morning, so he was out the door by 4:15am. By the time the kids woke me up at 5:25am (sleeping in, woo hoo!) I was excited for our day. A field trip! Then I looked out the window.

Damn.

Double Damn. Six inches of snow and still falling.

I didn't need to check the internet to know that preschool was closed, no field trip in sight, and WHAT THE HELL was I going to do with these children all day long? Kevin would be home for 30 minutes at most between jobs. Fiona is at a tough age where she has incredibly strong opinions about what she would like to do (go outside) combined with no concept of why it's not going to work (I don't have snowboots for my 12 month old). Taking her outside with Patrick sounded like a nightmare. I was resigning myself to a day of pajamas and too much TV when I gave Raissa a text. At 6:36am.

Come on over if you need to get the kids out of the house!

And praise the good Lord Jesus, she took me up on it. She brought over her kids and stayed for five hours. I was grateful for every second because we had a fine time. Or as close to a fine time as two Mommies can have without wine.

The kids did so great. They played wonderfully, and occasionally independently. Patrick was at the best version of himself; still needing some guidance and correction but catching on quickly to what his friends wanted of him. If you remember my life a year ago, this is a HUGE CHANGE.

We kept the kids moving throughout the house. Mini trampolines, cars, arts, playdough, snacktime, Kiki's Delivery Service, outside while Fiona took a 2.5 hours nap! books, lunch, and on and on.
And we let them play with the camera. Portrait of a Friend, by Micah L.

But she saved my life, that Raissa. What started as a bummer became a really great day blessed by companionship. Thanks, girlfriend! Next time, wine is included.

ps. Mom, the reason there are no pictures of Fiona is because she was sleeping while the camera was out. Next time....
