The definition of insanity

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I can't claim this quote, but lacking the original source, we'll just credit it to, "A wise woman once said..."

This is cropping up in my life more than I'd like to admit. But the one I'm willing to talk about is money.

Kevin and I are having some budgeting troubles.

The money is there, I keep reminding myself. It's just about how we use it. Or more accurately, keep track of it. Or don't. And we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again. I cry, Kevin comforts me, we both talk about what we are going to do differently, and then we go on our merry way until the next time.

This time we've got a plan. Hopefully a change in behavior will bring forth a change in outcome. We've got a daily scheduled date to check the accounts, do the math, and make sure we're covered for what we need/want to do.

Because I tell you, this is getting rather old.

Jenny, check out www.mint.com. You link all your checking accounts, credit cards, loans, it automatically updates them constantly and allocates your expenditures to different budgeting categories that you set. So you can get on line and see where you are at with your monthly budget at any point in time. It is a GREAT tool for married couples because it requires almost no maintenance and even if only one of you does the bookkeeping it gives you both access to the information so you can visually see where you are at without having to rely on the other person. No excuses! Only downsides are that you can't manually input transactions so you have to wait for them to hit and upload from your account, usually not more than a day or two. Also, if you bank with a small obscure bank they may not have access to their website.

I am soooo right there with you. I had to go all nazi on our finances and create a "system". It is working ok, but it could still be better.

Jenny, this is your brother, it's called a checkbook. I know being a hip young Seatle-ite this may be a difficult concept to grasp being it is not in a coffee shop with Wi-Fi so everyone can see you you type. But it does work. Love you see you soon.
