EIght Months

Dear Patrick: You are eight months old!

This last month has been filled with growth, changes, and transitions. Just as I thought I had you down, you go all changing on me. But a few things have stayed the same: your gigantic smile, your voracious appetite, and your fascination for anything that plays obnoxious music with flashing lights.

You've hit the beginning of a separation anxiety phase. It's all mom, all the time. If I have the audacity to leave your sight for more than a second, you crawl after me, sobbing pathetically until you can grab at my pants and climb up my leg. This is a particular challenge if I'm going to the bathroom. You aren't big on me dropping you off at the nursery, but you last a little bit if Dad does the deed. It's a tough one for me, as I hate to hear you cry. But darn it, sometimes a girl just has to have a sandwich!

We've also started feeding you three meals a day. For me, this feels like a huge step away from the "baby" phase towards the "kid" phase. You love this, and overall tend to be a big eater. We've tried lots of different things, and are frankly rather proud that we've managed to feed you all home-made food. OK, we didn't make the yogurt. But you really like it mixed with bananas. After a rough day, we've discovered the need to balance the pooping and non-pooping foods. You can handle soft chunks of food, but you aren't quite able to feed yourself.

With a good feeding schedule, another big change is the lack of flexibility. Unless I want to haul the gear, we have to be at home at 7am, 12pm, and 5pm. This had lead into the need for a more consistent nap schedule. You used to be able to sleep in my arms just about anywear. Now you are so easily distracted that you just get really grouchy instead of sleepy. I haven't been working that hard at getting you to nap in your crib. You fall asleep so nicely in the carseat or the stroller, and I love the cuddle time when you nap and nurse. Today I walked from home to the Proctor library, to Metropolitan Market and Safeway, and back home again. You slept the entire time!

You are learning so many fun new skills. My favorite is watching you clap your hands. You are starting to connect us going, "Yeah!" with clapping your hands. So fun. And I think you are figuring out "So Big!" but not consistently. You love knocking down block towers. You crawl after the dogs' toys. You are so close to holding the sippy cup by yourself.

So Big! Mommy loves you all the time, even grumpy. And when I said you were free to a good home that one time, I didn't really mean it.

Love
Mommy
