Yesterday, Friday, we went on a tour to Wicklow County. The primary destination was Glendelough, where St. Kevin's Church resides. The husband was particularly excited; his folks visited Ireland several years ago (they were actually there for 9/11) and gave him a beautiful picture, which now hangs in the dining room. The tour was Wild Wicklow tours, recommended by the infamous Rick Steves, without whom no decisions are made. Our tour guide, Kevin, was perfect. Like listening to a favorite uncle tell stories disguised as lectures. He pointed out lots of sites in Dublin as well. We finished off the day driving through Sally Gap. It was a relief to get out of the city. Although Dublin has some amazing sites and loads of places to visit, it's a dirty city. Lots of litter and cigarette butts, panhandlers, and noise. Wickow is called "The Garden of Ireland" justifiably. Almost as pretty as the Pacific Northwest.
After the tour, we cleaned ourselves up and took the light rail to Cobblestone. It's in Smithfield, an industrial area that's cleaning itself up to become favorable to wealthier residents and tourists. Cobblestone has, arguably, the best traditional music sessions, or trad, in the city. We were instructed that the best music isn't for listeners, it's for the players. If the musicians are in circle, ignoring the audience, then it'll be top rate. We also had the pleasure of meeting up with a gentleman we'd chatted up during the musical pub crawl. He was loads of fun, and he and Kevin discovered a common sensibility. After a while, they ignored me and discussed lots of geeky boy topics. It was a charming evening.
Kisses
Jenny
