The trip was perfect. Fort Stevens is right outside Astoria, on the northern Oregon coast. For Lewis and Clark junkies, it's close to Fort Clatsop and Cape Disappointment. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to check out the historical stuff. Not enough time, and we had the puppies with us. Even year I think, "We should do this more often." 10:1 odds that will happen.
We left Tacoma Friday morning, packed into the Subaru with broken A/C. It was a HOT drive. Decent traffic, and a cool breeze finally hit as we arrived at the coast. After a water stop for the puppies, we arrived at Fort Stevens. The campsite was nice, but very cramped. Jerry mentioned that Oregon camping is extremely popular, and since reservations can be made online, one must take the initiative to get good spots on a good weekend. Kevin and I shared a spot with Mom and Craig (who had gotten their earlier), who were both really sweet about watching the dogs when we went on a bike ride.
But it was a typical camping trip. Gorgeous weather, good food, campfires, playing games, naps, reading books, walking the dogs, gossiping with family. The only noteworthy occurrence happened with Danica. We took Danica and Freya (who were such good puppies again) to the beach Saturday morning. Our timing was perfect, no crowds so they could be off leash. And they RAN! And SWAM! And PLAYED FETCH! Nothing beats watching them run with freedom, panting with happiness. But in her exuberance, Danica swallowed lots of saltwater. Her GI system was not impressed. Luckily, after she projectile vomited a liter of water, my girl was feeling better and ready for action again.
