The Right Time Finally Came Along

11. A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffett (new present from my birthday) new read
I've been waiting for the right time to read this book. Jimmy is hot sunshine, a cool breeze, and nothing else to do. This book could not be read in February, under a wool blanket with hot cocoa. So I started it yesterday after getting off work early, thank the good Lord in heaven. Not a complicated story, but a damn well-told one. It reads like a warm evening in a fishermen's bar, where the story gets more elaborate with the telling.

"A semi-true story, believe or not. I made up a few things and there's some I forgot."

Would it appeal to people who aren't parrotheads? In my biased view, I canna say. But it's perfect for summer and a change of pace from "meaningful" books with "inspirational" stories. Tully Mars, the main character, was first introduced in "Tales from Margaritaville, Fictional Facts and Factual Fiction." But his story was one of many short tales. ASPL takes up where that left off.

So today I'm bucking down to make up for yesterday's lazy reading in the backyard. I've already practiced three Messiah pieces. I'm going to pay bills after this. I might even get a bit of weeding done. But it's the music practice I dread the most. I'm a terrible practice-er. I love rehersal, but I loath the boring, repetive pounding of the notes at home, struggling with my abysmal keyboard skills. However, I hate it less than Geoff giving me dirty looks when I'm obviously struggling through a piece. I have one month to learn "good enough"16 peices. Damnit, I nailed the Rachmoninoff. I can "Handal" the Messiah. So mark your calenders for December 10th, and come to see me in TSO's The Messiah.
