Masa

Kevin and I splurged and went out to eat tonight.

It's really our favorite activity, going "out to eat." Whether a big meal or just a snack, we love trying new places and having that experience. Our focus is on locally-owned places, and we try to avoid chains and generic eateries.

It's taken a whole new approach with a baby. We don't want to be the kind of couple that never does ANYTHING because "of the baby." But it does require a different level of thoughtfulness, preparation, and planning. It can't be too expensive (we can't afford it) because what's the point of an elegant dinner if you spend it bouncing your baby beside the table? Plus, in case of a meltdown I don't want to fuss over but we spent so much money! and just get the hell out the door. So we need charming yet affordable, avoiding Red Robin-esque places. However, "Kids Eat Free" is rather appealing, and worth consideration as kiddos get older. Currently, I need to be able to nurse with relative ease, as Patrick-the-piggy eats about hourly during the daytime. Plus, it's the easiest way to quite him when he's grumpy. Booths are good. Finally, one must eat early for dinner. Places tend to be less crowded, more likely to have other kids present, and there is less of a wait, if any.

Of course, happy hour is out. No babies in the bar, picky buggers.

So we splurged on Masa tonight. Kevin's been itching to try it. We did alright, price-wise. He ordered a dinner while I had a salad. Food good, but not outstanding. Two drinks (one beer, one non-alcoholic treat) and a dessert. About $35 bucks. Decent service, moderately friendly but not chatty. Timely getting orders out. Fun atmosphere. I especially like the non-alcoholic options. My only complaint: no changing table. Patrick nursed discreetly in our corner booth, with Kevin holding up the blanket as I got situated. Nobody made me feel uncomfortable.

I preferred the lunch menu, as it was more affordable. The bar is cute and would do happy hour there sans baby. But it wouldn't be my first choice for dinner. Just not outstanding enough to be worth the prices.

Yeah! Another milestone, to go out for dinner for the first time with baby ... but no baby changing table, that sounds borderline illegal!
